Condition Report

The trophy is in poor shape after 110 years of service. The base of the trophy is very badly dented and it needs expensive repairs. The mesh on top is also damaged and out of shape. The plinth on which it stands is scratched and scuffed. It's made of plastic (possibly Bakelite) and wrapped round with a stainless steel band. It looks cheap and ugly and it just doesn't compliment the trophy. It is crying out for a wooden replacement. Is there a modern-day philanthropist like the great CW himself among us? About a grand should cover it.
The Club Champions
This list of the previous Leeds Chess Club champions is under construction. Some years the records have been lost, some years there was no competition (e.g. the war years) and some years no records were kept. There are a lot of minute books to go through before this list is any way comprehensive. Meanwhile, this is what we have:

TOURNAMENT FORMATS

I was club Secy in the late-80s, so I know the format used up to 1991 was the "World Cup" system - four groups, with the top two in each group entering a knock out phase.

From 1992-95, the All-Play-All system was used, which allowed weaker members a crack at the crown. purely by playing more games than anyone else. (No offence intended to Brianovski Foster.)

Further research is needed into the format of earlier tournaments. The traditional All-Play-All and Knock Out systems seem most likely.
