2020*      Leeds                       Rose Forgrove           Limewood & Scar     Limewood & Scar

* 2019/20 season abandoned midway due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The leaders of the respective divisions were declared champions. There was no competition in 2020/21 for the same reason.

Notes

Sadly, the Leeds team that won Div 3 in 2015 was in fact the Leeds A team. The club declined after leaving the town centre and finally ran out of steam in 2016.

Leeds City Centre Chess Club, meanwhile, were thriving and won Div 1 four years on the trot from 2014-17.

It seemed the obvious thing that the two clubs should merge and LCCCC take on the Leeds Chess Club name, putting the club back where it belongs and ensuring that our long and auspicious history and tradition was not lost. Rupert Jones (who played for LCC in the 70s) along with Robin Browne and Peter Mason were the main driving forces in saving the club.

Expect Leeds Chess Club to appear on the honours list again in 2020, hopefully by winning the top two divisions!

Inner Circle CC are highlighted because there's a funny (?) story behind their meteoric rise through the divisions. Karl Swainston captained the Leeds A team to two Div 1 championships in 1992 & 93. He then quit the club after accusations of cliquishness and cronyism. He started a new club, which had to start out in Div 3. They won Div 3, Div 2 and Div 1 in consecutive seasons. Their B team "The Outer Circle" won Div 3 in their first year too for good measure. Having proved his point, Karl returned to Leeds Chess Club and we won Div 1 three years on the trot from 1998 to 2000. They do say that the biggest club in Leeds is "ex-Leeds".

YTV CC are highlighted because LCC merged with them for a couple of years in the 1980s. Technically, the team that won Div 1 in 1986 was Leeds & YTV CC, rather than Leeds CC.

Worth noting that Rupert Jones, mentioned above, was a member of the Leeds team that won Div 3 in 1981, along with Gary Senior, Pete Swallow, Mike Walker, ACL Dyson, Stu Howieson and Ken Appleby.
